Our plain Loukoums are flavored with mastic gum, a resin extracted from the bark of a small evergreen shrub related to the pistachio tree. The masitc (or known in the West as Arabic gum) imparts a clean and subtle resinous flavor. For centuries, mastic has been used in the Mediterranean region as a digestive aid. A 1985 study by the University of Thessaloniki discovered that the mastic can reduce bacterial plaque in the mouth by 41.5 %. The University of Athens in 1998, conducted a study that found mastic oil to antibacterial and antifungal qualities. Our Loukoums are velvety smooth cubes dusted with powdered sugar.
